Reformer or mat? Choosing the right Pilates class for you

Class guides

Both Reformer and mat Pilates build strength, mobility and control, and both suit complete beginners. The difference is mainly in how the work feels, so here's a quick guide to help you choose.

Reformer Pilates

The Reformer is a spring-based machine with a sliding carriage, straps and a footbar. The springs give you adjustable resistance: they can support you through a movement or make it more challenging. You'll work lying down, seated, kneeling and standing, and your teacher will help you set up the machine and choose the right spring settings. Our Reformer classes have 8 places, so there's plenty of individual attention.

Try it if: you enjoy variety, like feeling supported by equipment, or want a full-body challenge that's easy to scale up or down.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses your own body weight, sometimes with small props, and focuses on breathing, alignment and the connection between your core and the rest of your body. We offer two styles: Classic, which focuses on the foundations, and Sculpt, which brings more pace and sustained muscular work.

Try it if: you want to really understand the fundamentals, enjoy a slower, more focused class, or want to build a practice you can also do at home.

Can't decide?

Try both. Many people find the two complement each other: the mat builds awareness and control, and the Reformer helps you explore strength and range. Every Reformer membership includes unlimited studio classes too, so you can enjoy both without paying twice.
